Rappan Athuk #109: Dispelling All Doubt

The wardens of the monstrous Ravager test the party’s strength.

(-GM)

6th day of Sarenith, 4722 AR

I shot arrow after arrow at the golems surrounding us. My arrows flew faster than an unladen swallow, slicing through the rocky flesh of these creatures. I laughed loudly as I watched our spellcasters fail at any sort of magical attack against these foes. They were made of rock, therefore most wizardry accomplished nothing.

Given time, I would have slain them all but eventually, Susurrus found a spell that could damage them. He summoned a wall of lava that swallowed two of the golems as they tried to pass through it. Grom-Gil-Gorm and I tore our way through the remaining enemies. The room was now silent. The only thing that remained of interest was the big statue of an angel. We considered trying to free them but they had the *circle triangle group thingy* emblazoned on them. We figured that they were probably here to defend this place and freeing them would only lead to more fighting. We continued forward to the far end of the room where a tunnel led onward.

The tunnel was quite short and ended with a vault door. However, it was no match for the might of our paladin, Valestar. He turned the wheel and the door swung open. Beyond stood a fearsome undead. I lit a smoke stick immediately, expecting a fight, but Valestar held me back from shooting. He whispered quickly to me that this creature was less evil than most things we had encountered so far and that we should talk to it first and maybe get some information.

Rappan Athuk #76: I’m da boss, I’m da boss, I’m da boss, I’m da boss, I’m da boss… I’m da boss, I’m da boss, I’m da boss, I’m da boss, I’m da boss, I’m da boss.

We last left our heroes as they encountered powerful spellcasting mummies deep within Rappan Athuk. Stay awhile and listen as the flame oracle Deckard Cain tells us what happens next.

20th day of Kuthona, 4720 AR

Valestar had strode up to the mummy, but before he could get close enough to swing his sword the mummy pointed a withered finger at him and uttered a word in a guttural voice and in a flash our warrior was no longer there. DFSIFA was standing still, paralyzed by the mummies’ terrifying gaze.

Doomfist ran straight up to a mummy now, swinging his fist in a deadly uppercut, but as soon as he made eye contact with the creature he stopped, seemingly oblivious to the danger around him while he stared off into space.

Rappan Athuk #75: The Great Cavern

The party keeps its promise to a floating eyeball and finds that the lead takes them to the most immense level yet. Valestar Ekhart narrates.

11th day of Neth, 4720 AR

Gundar

After some brief argument, which mainly consisted of DFSIFA wanting to go down the tunnel to 3 levels down, and us saying no, we finally agreed to go deal with the other floating eyeball that the eye of the deep wanted us to deal with. This giant eyeball was trivial to fight, and our new friend Gundar was quite grateful. He gave us a magic sword, and despite its negligible value, I appreciated the gesture.

Madrik had us go to a huge cavern over a mile across, and we wandered for a while, only encountering a few gargoyles and some goblins hard at work mining. I yawned, as did everyone else, as it seemed that there was nothing to do besides skewer rats and walk.

Finally, we came upon a huge mushroom. It was actually one of many, as there appeared to me a fungus forest in front of us. We flew above it and it stretched as far as we could see. I saw a quick movement in the mushrooms and one of the smaller one walked out towards the party. We flew down and i donned my Helm of Comprehend Languages. We parlayed, and once it understood our intentions weren’t to harm them, many more mushroom people came out and oohed and aahed at us. One tugged on my leg and pointed. I followed it into the forest, and saw about 100 feet in front of me, a large troll tearing up their mushrooms. I shook my head, drew my sword, and charged it. I took it by surprise, and my flaming sword made it unable to regenerate. It was dead before it knew what had hit it, and all the mushrooms cheered.

Rappan Athuk #72: Ghosts ‘n Goblins

The party, fewer in number and their paladin without his powers, continues to press deeper into the dungeon’s depths. Death from Somewhere Irrelevantly Far Away continues their tale. (-GM)

2nd day of Rova, 4720 AR

It is in grim circumstances that I write to you. The paladin has lost his holiness, both of our spellcasters are out with the flu, and our martial artist broke his wrist. So today only 4 of our powerful party descended into the depths of Rappan Athuk. We started by exploring a large cavern we had found on level 6. The area had been cleared of any hostiles, but there was a river flowing through the cavern. The water was dark. Black to the common eye. We traversed down the river, some by air and some swimming beneath its filthy surface.

After a short while of traveling, my keen ears detected sounds up ahead. I halted the party and listened closely. The sounds of pickaxes hitting stone floated up the river. I then picked up the sounds of 2 people conversing. No they were not quite human. Then I finally put my finger on it; they were speaking in Goblin. I informed the party that it was a goblin mining expedition and that we could approach. We moved closer and closer to the sounds. Once we were within line of sight, one of the goblins noticed our presence. He notified the others and pulled out a dagger. All the other goblins did the same and took their battle stations. Then one of them realized that we were the heroes he had heard so much about; he told his forces to stand down. We made small talk, but we had no business bothering them so we moved onward.

Up ahead, I heard sounds of splashing water echoing around. Shia droned on about how this meant there was a cavern ahead and that the splashing sound was water rippling as it made eddies against the current and so on. We pretty much ignored him until we got to see it for ourselves. The cavern was large, but nothing we had not seen before. The party twiddled their thumbs while I searched the entire cavern thoroughly. Just to make sure I had not missed anything, I put on the helm of underwater action and swam down to check the bottom. The water was so murky that I could not see, so I just ran my hands along the river bottom. Surprisingly enough, after 10 minutes of doing this my hand bumped into a latch. I wrapped my hand around and tried to pull myself closer but instead the latch moved toward me opening up a secret tunnel. I swam to the surface to tell everybody to come on down and check out what I had found. Intrigued, we made our way through the tunnel. After blindly swimming for about 50 feet the water receded to our feet and we could walk normally.
