Rappan Athuk #37: Get Out of the Line

17 Feb

The party explores more passageways, connects the dots, and goes into the deepest level of Rappan Athuk yet. Nioveskirian, recovered from his rocky predicament, rejoins the party and tells their tale… (-GM)

10th day of Gozran, 4718 AR

otyugh

We came to a cavern that smelled much ranker than the others. Sewage and dead bodies were everywhere…

Returning home from a nice week off in my home town, that lingering spark of pessimism finally silenced, and what do I have to ease me back into the land of hard justice? My companions whining about their limits and squabbling over some pricey loot they recovered. I managed to arbitrate through most of the distribution, and then we were ready to explore.

No, wait. Death from Somewhere Really Far Away wanted to make some obsure magic item for himself. Of course, he isn’t very skilled in the ways of magic, so he had Shia do most of it. It took almost three months, and ended up being muddy, leafy, smelly, and unable to function in urban areas. After that time was wasted, we finally got to go back to the temple.

We wandered through a bunch of obscure passageways and halls for a while, smiting any Orcus cultists we saw, until we came to a cavern that smelled much ranker than the others. Sewage and dead bodies were everywhere. Then the ground gave way and an otyugh came out. Luckily for us, he was not hostile. The otyugh, whose name was Max, just wanted some flesh, so we dragged in the cultists we killed earlier. He gave us some exceptional items in return.

After some more wandering, Valestar realized that we had explored here before. I wouldn’t know, because this was from before I joined, but I suspect the others should have noticed something was off before then.

intellect-devourer

I could have been helpful in so many ways in that fight. I could have eliminated the threat before it withdrew. But no…

And then we came upon this huge room with a little pyramid-shaped crypt in a corner. An inscription in Draconic said something to the effect of  “Don’t you dare disturb this because untold horrors will come. Fear the wrath of the late Joe Schmoe.” We disturbed it anyway, and an intellect devourer jumped us.

I could have been helpful in so many ways in that fight. I could have eliminated the threat before it withdrew. But no, the others were in the way of my charge. Still, we got rid of it rather easily. And there were no other untold horrors. I suppose the late Joe Schmoe wasn’t very powerful and wanted us to give him the benefit of doubt. Hopefully we will encounter more worthy opponents as we descend deeper.

Signing off,
Nioveskirian
